Purpose

There are four openings for the position of Management Trainee; successful candidates will be placed in an appointment that will last up to 12 months in one of the following departments: the Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS), the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), the Department of Public Works (DPW) -Administrative Services and DPW – Infrastructure.

Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS)  

The DNS Management Trainee will work on both process improvement and human resources projects by implementing the electronic plan review process at the Development Center, streamlining reports to evaluate inspector and section performance, updating the DNS Employee handbook and developing onboarding procedures.

Milwaukee Police Department (MPD)-Open Records (ORS)

The MPD Management Trainee will create detailed weekly reports relative to workflow trends of the ORS Section and serve as a liaison between the ORS and the MPD Records Management Section (RMS).

Department of Public Works (DPW) – Administrative Services

The DPW-Administrative Services Management Trainee will provide support for various human resources and safety-related functions by investigating complaints, managing cases and responding to inquiries. 

Department. of Public Works (DPW) Infrastructure

The DPW – Infrastructure Management Trainee will track and assess human resources data, create initiatives and training for equity and inclusion, perform research for classification studies and provide onboarding and offboarding support.

While appointments to Management Trainee are limited to up to one year, transfer/promotional opportunities to positions within the City of Milwaukee agencies may be available prior to completion of the trainee period.

Essential Functions

Analysis         

  • Manage resources and processes to effectively and efficiently ensure the timely completion of assigned duties.
  • Use computer applications to generate reports, analyze and store data, and to compose written material.
  • Assist in solving problems by employing various types of analysis through critical thinking and proficient use of information.        
  • Employ mathematical and statistical reasoning to solve practical problems and to complete job tasks.     
  • Read and interpret technical material, rules and regulations, and policies to determine core subjects and ideas.         
  • Use creativity to develop new processes where current processes are ineffective or inefficient.

Customer Service        

  • Communicate verbally and in writing to internal and external customers to determine and meet their needs.         
  • Develop open and effective lines of communication with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that project and program goals are met.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in, public administration, forensics, business administration, criminal justice, human resources or a related field from an accredited college or university within the past two years (at time of application).

Note 1: Students in their final year of college (at time of application) may participate in the selection process, but are not eligible for appointment until they have completed their degree.

Note 2: To receive credit for college, transcripts are required and must be received by the application period closing date. College transcripts should be attached to your online application. Technical       

  • Ability to analyze and summarize data and trends.         
  • Knowledge of basic computer software applications to facilitate work processes (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software).        
  • Ability to learn and become skilled at using enterprise software.         
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical and statistical principles.         
  • Skill in reading and interpreting a variety of technical written materials.        
  • Ability to proofread documents for accuracy and for grammar, punctuation and spelling.        
  • Ability to review and analyze data and apply the results to reach accurate conclusions.

  • Ability to plan and organize work.         
  • Ability to meet established timelines.         
  • Ability to maintain the quality of work through careful attention to detail.

Current Salary

The current salary (PG 2EX) is $48,670 and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $50,130.

Note: Management Trainees are not eligible to participate in the employees’ retirement system.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral exams, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision.

INITIAL FLING DATE- The examination will be held as soon as practical after Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice. However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration.
