The Fleet Service Welder performs all types of welding, brazing, soldering and cutting to all types of metal to effect repairs to automotive and heavy equipment components, frames, drawbars, chains and miscellaneous towed and hand operated maintenance equipment.

Automotive and Equipment Welding

• Weld, cut, heat, form, and bend metals using various welding equipment, tools and torches.
• Weld in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Bend, form and cut metal on shear, slip roller, metal brake, band saw, and hydraulic ironworker.
• Repair truck bodies, floors, tailgates and metal accessory parts, weldments and structures; repair snow plows and plow mountings on trucks.
• Operate gas and electric welding equipment and power woodworking equipment.
• Use drill presses, grinders and metal cutting saws.
• Fabricate plow parts, metal tool or storage boxes, brackets, and related items.
• Repair tool heaters and tar kettles; install wood planking on trailers.
• Fabricate special tools and tool boxes, brackets and attachments for new equipment set-up and special equipment modifications.
• Make repairs to equipment in the field.
• Recognize and use the most economical and efficient methods in making repairs or fabricating components, consistent with the demands of the fleet service.

• Perform minor repairs to building, grounds, and equipment.
• Maintain shop equipment and tools.
• Maintain and submit forms, reports, and records.
• Order stock materials, and maintain electronic inventory.
• Safely drive and operate departmental vehicles and equipment in order to navigate in and out of shop space and to commute to field locations to conduct repairs. 

Technical Development and Safety

• Participate in technical development activities to keep current with industry relevant practices and standards in welding and fabricating.
• Adhere to all federal, state, departmental, and welding industry safety laws, rules, practices, and procedures.

The Fleet Service Welder must be willing and able to do the following:

• Subject to mandatory call-in for emergency duty during non-standard business hours.
• Perform work in the shop and outdoors in variable weather and environmental conditions.
• Perform work requiring physical exertion and agility, including walking distances; climbing stairs and ladders; bending and crawling; reaching, pushing, and pulling; and doing repetitive movements.
• Maintain awareness of surroundings, with visual acuity at the machine operator level and hearing sensitivity to be able to receive oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound (no less than a 40 dB loss).
• Perform medium physical labor (exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, moving equipment up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and transferring objects weighing 10-20 lbs. frequently).
• Conduct heavier lifting with assistance of shoplifts, yard cranes and forklifts.
• Adhere to departmental standards for work clothing, wearing a respirator, and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e., welding helmet, hand-held shield, or goggles; respirator; fire-resistant clothing; ear muffs or ear plugs; boots; and gloves).
• Maintain keen awareness to avoid hazards such as moving mechanical parts, electrical current, scaffolding, fumes, oil, and dust.
• Provide basic hand tools needed to perform essential tasks at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Note: This position is subject to U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations on Drug and Alcohol Testing, including the required release of drug and alcohol tests conducted by previous employers within two years preceding appointment, and random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment with the City of Milwaukee.

• Federal or State issued structural welding certificate or other recognized certifications or qualifications.
• Skilled in the use of a Plasma Cutter.

Technical

• Knowledge of the procedures, processes, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in welding, fabrication, brazing, and soldering.
• Knowledge of safe repair shop work procedures and the ability to use tools and equipment safely.
• Knowledge of automotive design and functionality to accurately diagnose the problem, determine the best course of action and complete the appropriate repair.
• Ability to safely drive and operate departmental vehicles and equipment in order to navigate in and out of shop space and to commute to field locations to conduct repairs.  
• Operational knowledge of tools such as grinders, drill presses, brakes, shears, and rollers.
• Skill in performing Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Metal Inert Gas (MIG), and stick welding with aluminum and steel.
• Skilled in the use of Arc, Air Arc, gas and wire feed equipment in order to perform  structural welding repairs on heavy vehicles.
• Ability to perform open set-up welding, brazing and soldering.
• Ability to cut various metals and fabricate parts using heat, hand tools (manual and powered), and shop machinery.
• Ability to weld joints in flat, vertical and overhead positions.
• Ability to read and understand work-related documents such as manuals, policies, procedures, drawings, and blueprints.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of mathematics, including decimals, fractions, geometry, and measurement.
• Ability to accurately size, cut, and fit metal.
• Ability to conceptualize and fabricate products.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose problem and make repairs.
• Ability to learn and use job-related computer programs.

• Ability to accomplish work within deadlines.
• Ability to maintain accurate work records.
• Ability to work well independently.
• Honesty and ability to safeguard all departmental property.

The current salary range (PG 7ON) is $51,137-$66,702 annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $52,671-$68,703 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

The Selection Process will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods.
