Introduction

** THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE OPERATIONS DRIVER WORKER EMPLOYEES ONLY**

Purpose

Under the direction of the Dispatch Manager or his/her designee, the Special Equipment Operator I operates gasoline or diesel powered trucks, tow trucks, tractors, front end loaders, and wheel or caterpillar type equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Operate all City trucks and special equipment for plowing, salting or other ice control operations.
  • Make necessary adjustments and minor maintenance on trucks and related equipment including front-end loaders, snowplows, and hydraulic excavators.
  • Drive trucks of various sizes, types and functions as a working member of crews within the infrastructure, electrical, sanitation and/or forestry divisions.
  • Operate assigned vehicles safely and load them within legal weight limits for the purpose of hauling equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Perform manual labor such as lifting, pushing and loading special equipment for salting or ice control operations.
  • Record and respond to customer inquiries and complaints in the field; refer complex issues as appropriate to supervisory staff.
  • Participate in the City’s snow and ice control operations by removing snow and icing sidewalk equipment.

Conditions of Employment

The Special Equipment Operator must be able to do the following:

  • Work in inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) and withstand prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions (e.g. cold, rain, wind, and snow).
  • See clearly both near and far to read signage and perform job duties safely and accurately.
  • Perform moderate physical labor including, transporting various pieces of equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Work beyond assigned shifts to respond to various emergencies. Snow and ice operations and other emergencies may require Special Equipment Operators to work at any time during the day or night, 24/7.
  • Stoop, bend and perform tasks that require repetitive motion, such as shoveling snow.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee Operations Driver Worker, having successfully completed a probationary period for this civil service position.
  2. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Class A or B) without Air Brakes restriction throughout the hiring process and throughout employment.  
  3. Obtain Class A endorsement within six months of appointment.
  4. Good driving record. Driving records will be checked prior to job offer.
  5. Entry level experience operating Street Sweeper, Trackles, Vac-All, Skid Loader and all other seasonally related equipment.
  6. Remove snow and ice sidewalk equipment during general ice control operations.
  7. Appointment to the Special Equipment Operator I positions within the Department of Public Works requires residency within 15 miles of the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Milwaukee within six months of appointment pursuant to Rule III, Section 4(g) of the Rules of the City Service Commission. Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of tractor equipment and operations.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Ability to perform work in a safe manner including when operating related vehicles and equipment such as trucks, plows and ice equipment.
  • Oral communication skills to be able to explain snow and salting removal policies to residents and other interested parties.
  • Ability to perform quality pre-trip inspections pursuant to CDL standards.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow departmental rules, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to monitor traffic to ensure safe conditions while working.
  • Ability to read and interpret City street maps.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in the field.
  • Ability to follow directions and schedules.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance on basic equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and interact with the public courteously.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 8NN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $56,655 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $55,266. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and DPW: Operations reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

Note: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary, or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
