Introduction

**THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY**

Purpose

The Parking Checker is responsible for enforcing all parking and abandoned vehicle regulations under the direction of the Parking Enforcement Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Provide information to the public regarding parking regulations and facilities, and the location of streets, buildings and points of interest.
  • Patrol an assigned area by vehicle or on foot to ensure public compliance with existing parking ordinance.
  • Identify vehicles in violation of parking regulations and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Enter and retrieve information pertaining to vehicle registration, identification, and status, using hand-held computers.
  • Report parking and other violations to the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) and assist in the investigation of abandoned vehicles and the recovery of stolen vehicles.
  • Issue citations related to illegally parked vehicles.
  • Testify in court relative to contested traffic citations.
  • Make arrangements for towing of illegally parked or abandoned vehicles and direct tow-truck drivers to the correct vehicles.
  • Complete written reports and maintain records of job-related activities.
  • Provide traffic control at accident or incident scenes.
  • Observe and report hazardous conditions, such as missing traffic signals or signs, and street markings that need to be repainted.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be available to work any shift, including weekends and holidays and/or rotating shifts when needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors from an assigned vehicle or foot patrol in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing 50 pounds or more occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds consistently.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position.
  2. Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Good driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. Driving record will be checked prior to job offer.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Criminal Justice or a closely related field from an accredited college or technical college; and one year of experience related to essential functions for this position.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 6GN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $30,773-$37,260 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $30,018-$36,346. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.  

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the DPW-Operations Division reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral exams, performance tests, or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

NOTE: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
