Purpose

The Tow Lot Assistant III performs customer service and data entry at the City’s tow lot.

Essential Functions

Tow Lot Operations

  • Interpret and explain parking regulations, city ordinances, and statutes.
  • Review and verify submitted documents for validity and compliance with the statutes.
  • Process approximately $5,000 daily in cash, credit or check payments for towing and storage fees, vehicle sales permits, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) transactions, parking citations, and vehicle bills.
  • Reconcile cash deposits with drawer report. Identify and report discrepancies.
  • Process and perform transactions for vehicle sales permits and DMV reporting. 
  • Maintain accurate lists for vehicles eligible for sale and coordinate auction data for potential bidders.
  • Process, invoice and collect payments for vehicles sold and other transactions from corporate customers.
  • Organize, maintain, and back-up electronic and hard copy records.
  • Research vehicle ownership information using TriVIN, National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and other sources.
  • Process accounts receivable and payable and enter into the appropriate management financial system.

Customer Service

  • Answer customer inquiries in person, via telephone, and online, including escalated complaints.
  • Process inquiries from insurance companies, lien holders, agents from owners, bidders and police officers.
  • Prepare written responses to complaints, claims, and open records requests.

Database Management

  • Perform entry, query, and data manipulation in tow lot management software for new and existing vehicles.
  • Utilize multiple databases to establish ownership, check for stolen vehicles, and locate vehicles.
  • Use spreadsheets to accurately input vehicle data and perform basic data functions.
  • Maintain tow record files, including electronic and digital storage and recovery of related records.

Conditions of Employment

The Tow Lot Assistant III must be able to:

  • Work an assigned 40-hour schedule that includes scheduled shifts Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; work extended hours and holidays as required to meet operational needs.
  • Physically lift and move up to 10 pounds unassisted.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Two years of customer service and data entry experience.
  2. A valid driver’s license by the date the application period closes, throughout the hiring process and throughout employment.
  3. Good driving record at the time of application and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in municipal towing, parking and/or vehicle recycling and disposal.
  • Experience handling cash.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (Pay Range 5GN) is $47,051 annually, and resident starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $48,462Appointment will be made in accordance with the City of Milwaukee Salary Ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
