Purpose

In addition to ensuring that City facilities and programs are accessible to all residents and visitors, the ADA Coordinator organizes the City of Milwaukee’s efforts to comply with the Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) agreement regarding the City’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). 

Essential Functions

Planning and Coordination of ADA Compliance Projects

  • Provide strategic recommendations and guidance on ADA related city-wide and departmental decisions, issues, projects, policies and programs.
  • Work with City departments, independent licensed architects, and Information Technology (IT) consultants to plan and coordinate projects to ensure access to City facilities and programs, including building improvements and alternative technology implementation.
  • Develop project timelines.
  • Consult with Budget staff to develop project cost estimates and budgets.
  • Encourage an understanding of the ADA, disability rights and Title II policies by providing training.

ADA Accessibility Compliance

  • Develop an internal procedure for filing, responding to and investigating complaints related to accessibility.
  • Receive and investigate ADA complaints from residents and local disability groups.
  • Determine corrective action to resolve complaints and ensure remediation.
  • Oversee the coordination of requests for auxiliary aids, services, and reasonable modifications to polices, practices, and procedures for City events and meetings.

Department of Justice Reporting  

  • Draft and submit reports related to project progress and compliance.
  • Annually submit the City’s written procedures to inform interested people with disabilities of the existence and location of the City’s accessible programs, services and activities to the Department of Justice

Internal Review

  • Coordinate and monitor the City’s compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and guidelines regarding disability discrimination related to accessibility.
  • Review City programs, policies, activities, services and facilities for ADA compliance.
  • Work with affected departments to develop and implement plans to bring identified violations into compliance; follow-up with affected departments to ensure continued compliance.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, public administration, business administration, urban planning or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two years of project management experience, including developing project timelines, cost estimates and budgets relating to capital improvements or building improvements to meet compliance standards.
  3. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

  • ADA Coordination Training Certification Program (ACTCP).

  • Knowledge of project management, including developing project timelines, cost estimates, and budget management.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 2IX) is $60,824 – $85,151 annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $62,649-$87,706. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
