Purpose
Essential Functions
Administrative
- Perform legal administrative work, including processing, preparing, typing, and copying various documents such as briefs, pleadings, correspondence, opinions, ordinances, contracts, and agreements.
- Transcribe legal briefs, pleadings, correspondence, agreements, and other legal documents in matters pending before local, state, and federal regulatory bodies, boards, and commissions.
- Type and draft briefs for trial and appellate courts, including both federal and state courts.
Customer
Service
- Answer telephones, direct calls, and take messages.
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers by phone and in person, including responding to inquiries and explaining departmental policies and procedures.
Data and
File Management
- Enter, update, and maintain data in various computer databases.
- Maintain filing systems, including filing documents in paper and electronic formats.
- Assist City Attorneys with gathering necessary case information.

Minimum Requirements
- Two years of administrative support experience, including at least one year of experience in a law office.
Equivalent combinations of education
and experience may be considered; however, one year of experience in a law
office is required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Knowledge of legal documents, briefs, pleadings, correspondence, and procedures.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
- Ability to read and understand work related documents.
- Ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite and Case Management software such as ProLaw and/or eDocs.
- Knowledge of the structure and use of the English language, including word meanings, spelling, composition, and grammar.
- Verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with customers, coworkers, and managers.
- Written communication skills to be able to prepare accurate documents and reports.
- Knowledge of e-filing procedures.
- Knowledge of legal terminology.
- Ability to think logically and solve problems.
Interpersonal
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people, including coworkers, supervisors, public officials, representatives of other departments, and the public.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to individuals from all economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.

Current Salary
The current starting salary (Pay Range 6JN) is $41,212 annually,
and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $42,448
annually.

Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the
following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to
supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview
or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the
right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and
performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises.
Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of
the job.
INITIAL FILING DATE - The selection process will be held as soon as practical
