Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to examine and manage the more complex audit cases.  The Senior Revenue Auditor conducts professional audits of business accounting books and records to ensure compliance with applicable revenue laws and regulations, and to determine tax liabilities resulting from these audits. Work responsibilities include conducting complex audits, auditing financial records, evaluating, updating and improving existing audit programs, supervising two or more employees, providing taxpayer petitions for refunds, maintaining records, and conducting legal and regulatory research. The Senior Revenue Auditor requires considerable tact and professionalism when interacting with the public. The incumbent must be able to interpret laws and regulations, exercise independent judgment and initiative during complex field audits across various industries, and interact with a range of stakeholders, including the general public, attorneys, accountants, fellow auditors, revenue staff, and management. The key distinction between the Senior Revenue Auditor and the Revenue Auditor lies in the complexity of assigned cases. The Senior Revenue Auditor handles the most complex audits and is responsible for supervising, training new auditors and assisting with moderately complex cases assigned to Revenue Auditors. This position may also participate in coordinated or joint audits with professionals from other taxing jurisdictions. The Senior Revenue Auditor reports to the License & Revenue Supervisor.
