Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations**

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to assist in the medicine, surgery, preventative medicine, and quarantine programs of the Montgomery Zoo. The work responsibilities of the position are: performs routine and diagnostic laboratory testing, assists in medical procedures, performs administrative related functions such as records keeping and inventory, and contributes to the department's objectives. This position reports to Zoo Veterinarian.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a closely related field and one (1) year of veterinary technician experience at an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or other animal care facility.  A Veterinary Technician License is preferred. 

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.       

Special Requirements

Must be able to work weekends and holidays and special events. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s license and an insurable driving record in order to drive city vehicles to transport medical materials to provide on-sight medical assistance to animals. Qualified applicants must submit to a medical exam following a conditional job offer to demonstrate that they are TB negative. Must live within thirty-minutes of the Montgomery Zoo in order to respond to emergencies as they arise; or be willing to relocate within the first six months.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Zoo. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
