Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and MCCP Board Rules & Regulations**

Nature of Work

The Deputy Director of the Montgomery Zoo is responsible for the supervision and management of all animal care operations including general husbandry of the collections, record keeping, veterinary care and exhibit facilities maintenance, and the performance of administrative and related duties under the direction of the Zoo Director.  The Deputy Director practices hands-on supervisory skills by modeling positive, example-setting behavior while demonstrating a commitment to reaching the goals and objectives of the facility. The Deputy Director supervises most professional and support staff and represents the Zoo in the absence of the Director. 

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Biology, Wildlife Management, or a related field, and five (5) years of animal care management experience in a Zoological setting equivalent in size and scope to the Montgomery Zoo. Four (4) years of management-level experience in directing animal care decisions relating to the safety and welfare of an entire animal collection. Management-level experience is defined as experience which includes participation in decision making processes that influence and direct the operations, planning, purposes, and goals of the institution, not just supervisor experience. 

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be willing to obtain the status of Professional Fellow from the American Zoological Association.  Must be willing to work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays as needed and to be on call 24 hours to respond to emergency incidents or work special events as needed.

Kind of Examination

If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
