Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and MCCP Board Rules & Regulations**

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this job exists is to supervise and instruct mechanics and auto servicers and perform highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of trucks, heavy equipment, automobiles, farm equipment and motorcycles (City) and to perform highly skilled work in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of trucks, heavy equipment, and farm equipment (County).  The essential functions are:  supervises mechanics and servicers in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair of large trucks, off-road heavy equipment, automobiles, light trucks, motorcycles, small engines (City); performs equipment repair work on light, medium and heavy duty trucks, and off-road equipment; communicates with parts department personnel, businesses, other divisions and supervisors; performs miscellaneous functions; troubleshoots and performs repairs on electrical systems on various makes and models of vehicles; performs repairs on hydraulic system on various makes and models of heavy equipment; and troubleshoots and repairs brake systems.   Incumbents perform the more difficult repairs as needed, and report to a Service Manager or Garage Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have at least five years of recent experience as an automotive, diesel engine, heavy equipment, or fire apparatus mechanic at the journeyman level or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Journeyman experience must include at least two years of apprenticeship experience working under a trained mechanic and at least one year of experience working independently as a lead mechanic.  Applicants must also have experience using computer testing or diagnostic equipment on vehicles, diesel engines, heavy equipment, or fire apparatus. Preference may be given to those with current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s) or previous training or experience supervising mechanics or technicians.   Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.


Special Requirements

Must be willing to respond after normal working hours, work day or night shift, and be on-call 24 hours during emergency situations or when deemed necessary.  Must possess and maintain a current Alabama Driver's License and have an insurable driving record.   Must be willing to obtain an Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (City).  Must have a Commercial Driver's License (Class A), from the State of Alabama, or must obtain one within six (6) months of employment date (County).    Must be able to attend specialized training out-of-town as needed to maintain or improve skills. 

Kind of Examination
