Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and MCCP Board Rules & Regulations**

Nature of Work

This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus to include various makes and models of pumpers and ladders and rescue trucks.  Incumbents must have a high degree of technical ability as it relates to engines and major assembly rebuilding. Responsibilities include diagnosing problems, performing general and preventive maintenance, performing repairs on air brake systems, fire pump systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, diesel fuel systems, cooling systems and performing major repairs on engine or engine parts. Incumbent is supervised by the Garage Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

At least three (3) years of experience as an automotive, diesel engine and heavy equipment, or fire apparatus mechanic within the past five years at the journeyman level.  At least one (1) of the three years of experience must be as a fire apparatus mechanic.   The journeyman experience must include at least two years of apprenticeship experience working under a trained mechanic and at least one year of experience working independently as a lead mechanic.

OR must possess a diploma or certificate in diesel mechanics or a related area from a technical school and at least one year of experience within the past five years working independently as a fire apparatus mechanic.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

 


 


Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license.  Must be willing to obtain an Alabama CDL driver’s license in order to operate pumper and ladder trucks when conducting road tests.  Must be able to attend specialized training out-of-town as needed to maintain or increase skills.  Must be willing to respond to the Garage in order to make repairs to engines and ladder trucks after normal working hours and be willing to be on call 24 hours during a rotating basis.  Must be willing to workday or night shifts.

Kind of Examination
