Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise Parks and Recreation Department work crews involved in skilled or semi-skilled carpentry or painting activities.  The work responsibilities include: planning assignments using requisitions or supply requests, various work tools, etc.; directing activities of the crew on the project using various work tools, safety devices, etc.; performing carpentry and painting tasks of signs, picnic shelters and tables, etc.; documenting activities on projects using log books and daily report forms; and supervising the work crew.  The distinguishing characteristics of this classification include responsibility for supervising work crews engaged in manual semi-skilled to skilled labor performing a variety of maintenance and construction duties. The employee must also perform skilled manual work on a project.  Incumbents work under general direction.  They are generally in charge of the crew, plan and carry out assignments with considerable independence, and have some latitude in developing procedures and methods.  Assignments are received at the beginning of the shift and the foreman typically prioritizes the assignments.  Supervisors are contacted for guidance in cases of unexpected occurrences or unanticipated situations.  Errors made during the performance of tasks can result in safety hazards to the general public and the work crew.  Supervision is received from the District Parks Maintenance Superintendent.
