Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to perform technical work in the installation, maintenance, repair and programming of transmitting, receiving, and other communications equipment for the Police and Fire Departments and other City and County agencies having communications-equipped vehicles.  Duties include the assisting and assembling, installing, servicing, repairing and programming radio transmitting and receiving equipment; and completing equipment record sheets and repair forms. Other duties include assisting and performing the assembling, installing, servicing, repairing, programming and certifying Public Address (PA) Systems, Weather Warning Sirens/Network, Vehicular Siren Equipment, Knox Box System Equipment, Vehicle and Body Worn Digital Video Camera Systems, Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) Equipment, Public Safety Radar Guns and Mobile Radar Sign Equipment and P25 and EDACS Trunked Simulcast and Multisite infrastructure equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Electronic Systems Supervisor and/or the Assistant Electronic Systems Supervisor, but the employee is responsible for determining work methods by independently applying technical knowledge and skills to repair and service assignments to meet division requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have two (2) years of recent experience maintaining trucked radio systems and subscriber units, maintaining P.A. (public address) systems and maintaining weather warning systems and subscriber units.  Must have completed a certificate in Electronic Communications.  An Associate’s Degree or higher in general electronics technology may substitute for the certificate.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama drivers’ license and have an insurable driving record in order to drive City Employees must have a working contact phone number. Employees are required to be on call 24-hours a day, including weekends on a rotational basis and must respond within approximately 1 hour to the 911 Communications Center for emergencies. Preference will be given to applicants that possess a FCC Certification License.

Kind of Examination
