Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform responsible skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment used in street construction and street maintenance projects in the Maintenance Department.  Employee in this class will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment involved in street construction and maintenance activities. Normal work is performed on one or two specific pieces of equipment; however, employee may be required to operate other types of equipment for special projects and during slack or seasonal periods. The work responsibilities are:  operates various pieces of heavy equipment such as an emulsified asphalt (i.e.-tack) distributor truck, an asphalt spreader, a steel wheel roller, and a backhoe; services and performs routine preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned heavy equipment; and contributes to the department objectives by accepting additional assignments and performing additional duties and referred tasks.  The Construction Equipment Operator differs from the Heavy Equipment Operator II position in that the Construction Equipment Operator position requires comprehensive knowledge of and a higher level of skill in the operation of several different pieces of heavy equipment.  The Construction Equipment Operator (Asphalt) position differs from other Construction Equipment Operators in that the Construction Equipment Operator (Asphalt) must have a comprehensive knowledge of heavy equipment used specifically for road construction.  This position reports to the Street Construction Foreman.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, to include use of tack distributor trucks and/or asphalt spreaders in asphalt work, earth work, and grading.  Must possess a CDL Class ‘B’ with a tanker endorsement.

Special Requirements

Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, sit for extended periods of time, and lift 75-100 pounds in order to inspect, operate, and maintain equipment. Must be willing to work outdoors while being exposed to various weather conditions and work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed to perform job duties.

Kind of Examination

If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
