Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to perform semi-skilled mechanical work including assisting in installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems in the City of Montgomery facilities.  Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks requiring a practical knowledge of the HVAC mechanical trade.  Assignments are made by written or oral instructions.  More difficult work is performed under supervision, but employees may work independently on more routine maintenance and repair tasks.  Work is inspected in progress and upon completion for workmanship and satisfactory operation of systems.  Supervision is received from a HVAC Mechanic II or III.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent and one (1) year of experience assisting in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems. Must possess an EPA Universal Certification.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license. Must be able to dig, climb, squat, bend, crawl, and lift objects over 50 pounds assisted and unassisted as needed to perform installations, repairs, and maintenance of HVAC systems in city buildings and facilities.  Must be willing to work outside for long periods of time, work in small confined spaces, work in poor weather conditions, and work in high areas. Must be willing to work nights, weekends and/or holidays and be on-call 24 hours as needed for emergencies or special events.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Building Maintenance Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
