Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform supervision and management work in the administration of codes and ordinances related to building, electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, housing, and environment within the City of Montgomery.  The Chief Building Official serves as the technical expert and assures adherence to zoning requirements as well as applicable standards of construction, maintenance, safety, and environment. The major work responsibilities include: overseeing and coordinating the work of all Inspection Department divisions; overseeing the interpretation and creation of codes and ordinance; meeting and corresponding with various individuals regarding proposed construction; supervising the preparation of legal action complaints; coordinating the preparation of the department’s annual budget; and supervising two or more full-time employees.  The Chief Building Official exercises considerable independent judgement in decisions involving inspection and enforcement activities, technical matters, and the overall operation of the Inspections Department.  Supervision is exercised over subordinate inspection and office personnel. The Chief Building Official reports to the Director of Economic Development

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or closely related field and five years of experience as architect, contractor, engineer, inspector or construction superintendent to include three years of supervisory experience.  Qualifying education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.    

Special Requirements

Must have, or obtain within six months of employment, a certification as a Building Official through a recognized certification program such as that issued by the International Code Council.  Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s license and an insurable driving record.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery Inspections Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on their online applications. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, a selection procedure will be administered. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
