Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this classification exists is to ensure the security of buildings in the county complex.  Major work responsibilities include patrolling buildings and structures, ensuring that only authorized personnel enter county buildings, and investigating and taking action on alarms sounded in patrolled buildings.  Incumbents work rotating shifts (8 hour shifts/7 days a week). They are supervised by a Deputy Sheriff Sergeant and/or Lieutenant.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate and six months of experience in performing security duties such as patrolling grounds and buildings, operating monitoring/alarm equipment and acting as gatekeepers of personnel entering and leaving buildings and grounds.

Special Requirements

Incumbents need the physical ability to remain on their feet and walk for moderate periods of time (i.e., walking up and down stairwells of 4-6 flights and around building grounds on a variable basis) over the course of a two hour patrol period as needed to patrol the premises of County buildings several times in one shift and to travel to sites where trouble has been indicated.  Patrols are conducted in all types of weather and ground conditions.  They work rotating shifts (8 hour shifts/7 days a week).  Due to the confidentiality involved with the position, the incumbents must be willing to submit to background investigation.

Kind of Examination

If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application. Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
