Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate garbage packers and other refuse collection vehicles in order to service the Sanitation Department’s customers.  Sanitation Truck Drivers serve as the leader of a crew consisting of a driver and two service maintenance workers; drivers are responsible for setting the pace of work and ensuring the safety of the crew and the public.  Major work responsibilities may include: operating sanitation vehicles; serving as the lead worker for work crew; performing preventative maintenance checks; communicating with customers and the public; and assisting in the performance of manual labor.  Although routes are assigned by supervisors, Sanitation Truck Drivers are responsible for ensuring the assigned route is completed in a timely manner.  Work is performed with limited immediate supervision and requires drivers to exercise independent judgement while on routes. Supervision is received from the Refuse Collection Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) months of experience operating equipment such as garbage packers, sanitation vehicles, buses, tractor trailers, and other vehicles requiring a Class B CDL or higher.  Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher.

Special Requirements

Must work overtime, nights, and weekends for emergencies and special events.  Must possess and maintain an insurable driving record.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, or kneel as needed to operate and inspect equipment, perform preventive maintenance checks, and perform manual labor duties. Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time, up to 2 hours, in order to operate equipment. Physical ability to operate equipment from an enclosed cab while being exposed to inclement weather, dust, and dirt.

Kind of Examination

The current vacancies are with the City of Montgomery Sanitation Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.   If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered in order to rank applicants.  Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
