Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform responsible skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment used in construction and maintenance activities in the Maintenance and Engineering (Landfill) Departments.  Employee in this class will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment involved in construction and maintenance activities. Normal work is performed on one or two specific pieces of equipment; however, employee may be required to operate other types of equipment for special projects and during slack or seasonal periods. Essential functions are:  operates various pieces of heavy equipment such as a track excavator,  backhoe, lowboy tractor trailer,  bulldozer, motor-grader, tack truck, asphalt spreader, steel wheel roller, vacuum jet rodder, dump truck, trash compactor, scraper (pan), and/or  front-end loader;  services and performs routine preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned heavy equipment; supervises a work crew performing skilled, semiskilled and laborer duties,   and  contributes to the department objectives by accepting additional assignments and performing additional duties and referred tasks.  The Construction Equipment Operator position differs from the Heavy Equipment Operator II position in that the Construction Equipment Operator position requires comprehensive knowledge of and a higher level of skill in the operation of several different pieces of heavy equipment.  Employees at the Maintenance Department report to the Construction Equipment Supervisor and employees at the Engineering Department (Landfill) report to the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and/or the Solid Waste Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience operating three (3) of the following pieces of construction and maintenance equipment:  excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, motor-grader, asphalt spreader, trash compactor, and lowboy tractor trailer.  Supervisory experience preferred.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver's License and insurable driving record to drive and operate heavy equipment used for construction, maintenance and repair. Some pieces of construction equipment will require a specific CDL Class (i.e. - Class “A”, Class “B”, or Class “B with tanker endorsement”).  Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, sit for extended periods of time, and lift 75-100 pounds in order to inspect, operate, and maintain equipment.  Must be willing to work outdoors while being exposed to weather conditions and work weekends, holidays and overtime as need to perform job duties.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill two (2) vacancies and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Maintenance Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application, attached supplemental questionnaire and a performance field/skills test.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the online application and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, a skills test will be administered in order to rank order the candidates on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
