Nature of Work

The Buyer II classification is responsible for performing technical work purchasing a wide variety of supplies, materials and equipment.  Work responsibilities include reviewing and processing requisitions and purchase orders; preparing, reviewing, processing, and awarding bids; resolving problems related to the processing of requisitions, purchase orders, or bids; and overseeing and directing the work of clerical or subordinate employees.  Work involves contact in person and by telephone with vendors, department representatives, and others in order to answer questions, obtain information or resolve problems. Incumbents may supervise or assign work to clerical staff or Buyer Is who support the purchasing function. The Buyer II classification differs from the Buyer I classification in that the Buyer II is responsible for large scale purchasing and contracts.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree and two (2) years experience in large scale purchasing of supplies, equipment, or services to include experience conducting bid hearings and preparing, reviewing, and processing bids and bid specifications. Experience in large scale purchasing for a city, state or federal government agency is preferred. Related experience can be substituted for education on a year for year basis. 

Kind of Examination
