Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this class exists is to organize, direct, and coordinate the maintenance activities of the Support Services Department. The major functions of the position include managing maintenance and building repair projects for the County, supervising department personnel, serving as liaison with various groups, managing service contracts, receiving and handling complaints, performing various administrative duties, and developing short and long range plans, priorities, and policies for the department. The position delegates considerable authority for the performance of technical and day-to-day administrative activities to Assistant Plant Maintenance Engineer since the major emphasis is on overall administration and coordination. Broad policies are prescribed by, and general direction is received from the General Services Director.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate.  Five years of experience at a building maintenance superintendent level to include experience directly supervising work of skilled staff.  The following experience requirements can be a part of the five years of experience or can be in addition to the five years: two years of experience with electrical motors and controls; and, three years of experience as a maintenance superintendent over a large building with experience in HVAC, plumbing, construction, electrical, and pneumatic controls. Completion of technical school training will substitute for the two year requirement with electrical motors and controls.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License as needed to inspect County buildings, properties, and roadways and monitor the work and progress and various building and maintenance and construction projects.  Ability to pass a background check as needed to obtain access to the County Detention Facility.

Kind of Examination

If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be scored to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
