Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exist is to perform semi-skilled operation of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of county roads, drainage ditches and bridges. Major work responsibilities may include: operating various types of equipment including highway tractors, rollers, and backhoes; performing various maintenance and construction related duties utilizing equipment; performing basic preventative maintenance on equipment; training on additional equipment as time permits; and performing related manual work.  The County Road Equipment Operator I is distinguished from the County Road Equipment Operator II in that the CREO I typically performs less skilled equipment operations than the CREO II and operates equipment that does not require a CDL.  Work is ordinarily performed under the supervision of and frequently inspected by the Road Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) months of experience in the operation of off-road or industrial use equipment.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.  A CDL may be required to perform the duties of the relief Operator on vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License.
WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning as well as exposure to ants, bees, insects, and poisonous plants such as poison ivy and poison oak.  Equipment is operated on paved surfaces as well as across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at the various work sites.  Work requires some extended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty. 
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:   Physical ability to bend, stoop, walk, and stand for periods of time as needed to perform manual labor duties.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill five (5) vacancies and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery County Engineering Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than nine qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
