Nature of Work

The Assistant Director provides administrative support to the Detention Director and oversees the daily operations of the Montgomery County Detention Facility.  The incumbent is responsible for developing and monitoring facility policies and procedures, directly supervising Captains and Lieutenants, indirectly supervising Sergeants and Officers, overseeing facility operations, investigating and resolving complaints, preparing and monitoring the facility’s budget, acting as a liaison between the inmates and the officers and between the facility and the court and legal systems, and helping ensure the safety of staff and inmates.  The Assistant Director receives minimal supervision in the form of work product review.  Assignments are made by the Director in the form of concepts or ideas.  The incumbent is responsible for devising methods and practices and for the administration of the final concept or idea.  Errors in judgment on the part of the incumbent could result in law suit and/or loss of safety and/or life by personnel and inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public safety administration or a closely related field and 2 years of correctional supervisory/management experience at the level of shift commander (i.e., lieutenant) or higher.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery County Detention Facility Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
