Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to manage a team of employees in the Probation or Intake Division of the County Juvenile Court.  Major responsibilities include performing administrative duties, supervising staff members, communicating with other departments and organizations outside the facility, directing the screening and processing of complaints submitted to the Juvenile Court for review, making jurisdiction and venue determinations, recommending case processing.  Established social work methods are used to rehabilitate delinquent children and to equip them as useful members of the community.  Employees have considerable latitude in planning and monitoring treatment of cases. Supervision from the Chief Probation Officer is received through conferences and reviews of results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling or a closely-related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in professional juvenile court intake or probation work.  Education will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Special Requirements

Must be willing to be on-call 24 hours for emergency situations. Must be willing to submit to a background check and drug test and have a valid driver’s license. 

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery County Youth Facility.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, a two-part exam will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
