Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to plan, direct, and execute a comprehensive animal health program for the Montgomery Zoo including routine prophylaxis, treatment, and surgery for all living collections. Work responsibilities include:  monitoring the general health and well-being of the collection and developing solutions to perceived medical problems, diagnosing and treating sick or injured animals and providing pathology services for the Zoo animal collections, managing the health care unit at the Zoo and maintaining professional skills and current knowledge of wild animal medicine. Supervision is received from the Zoo Director and Deputy Zoo Director. Supervision is exercised over any personnel permanently or temporarily assigned to the Zoo animal health sub-division.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited college of veterinary medicine and license to practice veterinary medicine in Alabama (individuals who have relocated from another state must acquire an Alabama Veterinary License before the end of probation to continue employment) and one (1) year of experience as a veterinarian in a zoological or exotic animal clinic setting, which may include an internship.

Special Requirements

The employee must obtain Alabama certification in order to sign health certificates and obtain DEA license for Class I drugs. The employee must be able to respond to emergency situations within a reasonable time frame and provides twenty-four hour seven-day per week emergency veterinary coverage for the Zoo. The employee will also occasionally serve as Manager-on-Duty on weekends, holidays, and as other needs arise.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery Zoo. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
