Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to manage the conservation and enrichment programs of the Montgomery Zoo and improve the management of animal care as well as serve as the Elephant Manager. Major work functions include leading the Zoo’s efforts in the preservation of specific animal groups, leading the Zoo’s and the Museum’s efforts in the education of conservation as it pertains to the animal population, managing the behavioral enrichment program at the Zoo, managing the overall conservation and enrichment program, and supervising the animal care staff in the delivery of animal care services. Supervision is received from the Animal Care Manager. Supervision is provided to the Assistant Animal Care Manager which includes the direct and indirect supervision of zoo keepers and maintenance workers. Indirect supervision is received from the Zoo Director and Deputy Zoo Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in a life science. Two years of experience in the direct supervision of a zoo’s conservation program or one year of experience with an Association of Zoos and Aquariums conservation program. Experience must be obtained within the past five years. Experience can substitute for the bachelor’s degree with one year of experience for every one year of college course work.

Special Requirements

Will be required to work on some weekends and holidays. May occasionally be required to work over-time hours. Will occasionally be required to act in the place of the Animal Care Manager.

Kind of Examination

If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
