Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to develop and implement therapeutic recreational activities for the Therapeutic Recreation Center.  The essential functions of the position include planning, supervising and coordinating the scheduling of all programs for disabled persons; supervising staff and volunteers; coordinating the orientation of all new participants; contributing to the department objectives; assisting the Therapeutic Recreation Center Director in preparing and administering the operating budget; and coordinating, planning, and supervising volunteer and internship programs.  Supervision is received from the Therapeutic Recreation Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or an allied health professional field of study such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology or science,  speech pathology, music or art therapy,  special education, or  adaptive physical education and one year of experience programming activities for therapeutic recreation.  Preference will be given to those applicants who are certified therapeutic recreational specialists (C.T.R.S.) and/or have supervisory experience in a therapeutic recreational facility or setting.

Special Requirements

Work on holidays, nights, and weekends is required to ensure availability of programs and events to the community.  A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required in order to transport participants and/or equipment to various event sites.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Leisure Services Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If there are more than five qualified applicants, a selection procedure will be administered to rank the applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
