Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to operate sweeper and flusher trucks.  Employees perform maintenance work on the vehicles following an internal checklist and operator’s guide.  Employees drive and operate the vehicles using the control panel with the purpose of cleaning and washing streets and parking areas.  Employees operate other large vehicles when on special assignment. The employee reports to the Refuse Collection Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience operating equipment such as road construction power brooms, open-body trucks, and street sweepers. Experience with mechanical maintenance on large vehicles is preferred.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License Class A or Class B and insurable driving record to drive and operate equipment used for the  maintenance of Montgomery city streets.  Must possess a Tanker Endorsement for the operation of the Flusher Truck.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, or kneel for periods up to 15 minutes as needed to inspect equipment or perform preventive maintenance on equipment.             Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time, up to 2 hours, in order to operate equipment.             Physical ability to operate equipment from an enclosed cab while being exposed to hot and cold temperatures, dust and dirt.             Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds in order to lift gutter brooms.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Sanitation Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants.  Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
