Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to oversee a small crew of semiskilled and unskilled workers and participate in the application of herbicides in public areas including right-of-ways and neighborhoods. During slow periods, the Labor Foreman I and crew participate in activities other than herbicide application in order to complete departmental objectives. The essential functions of this position include: planning assignments, supervising and participating in activities with the crew, and documenting activities on projects.  The Labor Foreman I position is a working supervisor position.  Incumbents not only perform supervisory duties, but also perform the duties assigned to their subordinates.  The Labor Foreman I must be familiar with all of the tasks assigned to a crew as well as the equipment operated in order to monitor work progress and train employees in the performance of their duties. Supervision is received from the Chemical Works Supervisor, Superintendent, or Deputy Director.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in commercial chemical application such as herbicides, pesticides, and/or insecticides. 

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record in order to operate City vehicles.  Must have, or be able to obtain within six months of hire date, and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with Tanker Endorsement.  Must have, or be able to obtain within six months of hire date, and maintain a current Alabama Commercial Applicator License (Categories—Right of Way [ROW] AND Ground [GRND]).  

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 50-70 pounds as needed to move materials at work sites.  Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds over head as needed to fill spray equipment.  Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend repeatedly for extended periods of time as needed to complete various work tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements and traveling over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.  Work is performed using hazardous chemicals such as herbicide, pesticides, insecticides, and similar solutions.  Work may require some overtime, night, and weekend hours during peak seasons as well as prior to and/or after special city events.

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Maintenance Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be scored to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
