Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform professional engineering work reviewing traffic operation projects to ensure they are designed, constructed and inspected according to applicable federal, state, and city laws, regulations and standards.  The Traffic Engineer II advises and supervises the lower level professional and technical employees of the Engineering Division. Primary work responsibilities may include: managing the Engineering Division of the Traffic Engineering Department; supervising professional and technical engineering employees; receiving and addressing complaints or requests; designing and preparing plans and specifications; inspecting plans and construction of roadways and developments; coordinating and inspecting traffic operations projects; performing traffic engineering studies; designing construction plans for transportation improvement and safety projects; and conducting field observation surveys of traffic conditions and traffic control devices. Work is performed with considerable independence of judgment and initiative. The Traffic Engineer II reports to the Director of Traffic Engineering. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from a four-year accredited engineering program and three years of progressively responsible traffic engineering experience.  Must possess and maintain Engineer Intern (EI) status.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record as needed to operate a City vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed indoors and outdoors and exposes the employee to hazards of traffic control construction sites including dangers of fast moving high speed vehicles, and inclement weather conditions.  Work requires regular physical activities such as walking, crawling, standing, stooping, bending, and operation of a motor vehicle.  Work may require irregular work schedules to include nights, holidays, or weekends as needed during special events or emergencies.

If more than five qualified applications are received, the application will be used to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
