Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of commercial and residential buildings and structures.  Employees in this class are responsible for performing routine maintenance of buildings and equipment; the position requires multiple skills in more than one trade (i.e. - carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing trades).  The essential functions of this position include the following: performing various general maintenance and janitorial work, performing skilled carpentry work, performing skilled plumbing work, performing skilled electrical work, serving as a lead worker on maintenance projects, and conducting inspections. The classification is supervised by a variety of supervisors ranging from skilled trade supervisors to administrative supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent and three years of experience in building maintenance AND repair work utilizing several building trade skills such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.

Special Requirements

City and County of Montgomery - Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license as needed to travel for different projects and to different work sites.  Must work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.  Must be on-call as needed to complete special or emergency projects.  Must work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to complete projects.  Incumbents may be required to submit to background checks depending on their assigned job location.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery County Detention Facility. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and minimally qualifying questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and minimally qualifying questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
