Juvenile Probation Officer

Recruitment #18-CO0304-01

Nature of Work

This is legal, social and crisis work involving delinquency, dependency and cases involving children in need of supervision under the jurisdiction and supervision of the Family Court. Employees are assigned to work in the Intake or Probation division.
Intake:
Employees make initial decisions concerning the detention of juveniles in the Youth Facility or the removal of a child from an abusive or neglected home, based on knowledge of the Criminal and Juvenile Codes of Alabama, and departmental rules and procedures. Employees work with considerable independence, but on complaints of serious or complex legal nature consult with higher-level court personnel. Work is primarily reviewed by a Juvenile Probation Supervisor or the Juvenile Court Administrator for conformity with legal procedures and points of law on an after-the-fact basis. Because of the post review of arrest warrants/petitions, error in issuing warrants/petitions can have severe impact on the citizens or law enforcement officials involved.
Probation:
Employees are responsible for supervising and advising children and adults coming under the jurisdiction of the Court. Established casework methods are used to rehabilitate probationers and to equip them as useful members of the community. Work is usually received in the form of cases assigned by the court; and employees have considerable latitude in planning treatment of cases. Supervision from the Juvenile Probation Supervisor and Juvenile Court Administrator is received through conferences and review of results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications
