Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to manage the animal care operations work including general husbandry of the collections, veterinary care and exhibit facilities maintenance to ensure a professional standard of operations regarding animal health, welfare and conservation.  Supervision is exercised on a daily basis over the Assistant Animal Care Manager, Conservation and Enrichment Manager, Zookeepers, and indirect supervision over maintenance personnel, all involved in the delivery of animal care services and the maintenance of the exhibits and grounds.

Minimum Qualifications

A four-year degree in zoology, biology or related field from an accredited college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in the care and management of animal collections in a zoological park.  Experience in the field may be substituted for college training at a rate of two years of experience doing similar work for each year of college.  Preference will be given to candidates who possess the minimum requirements necessary for Professional membership in the Zoological Association of America.

Special Requirements

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen orders, wet, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.  

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: 

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and  may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (50 - 80 pounds).  

Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Zoo.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached willingness questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and willingness questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the willingness questionnaire and application.  Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.  If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
