Nature of Work

The Coordinator performs professional recreation work involving the planning and implementation of creative arts activities for special populations of various age level groups. Examples of creative arts includes, but is not limited to, painting, drawing, clay, and performance art. Examples of special populations include individuals with hearing and visual impairments, mentally and physically challenged and individuals with strokes.  Employees in this classification receive instructions on the scheduling of classes and on course content from the supervisor, but must exercise independent judgment in the application of specialized knowledge and techniques in the conduct of the work.  The employee is primarily tasked with developing modified creative arts activities and programs, teaching creative crafts, maintaining a green house and garden area, ordering and maintaining creative arts supplies and materials, overseeing a recreation aide and volunteers, coordinating events, teams, clubs, etc. and contributing to the Therapeutic Recreation Center’s (TRC) objectives. Employee in this classification reports to the Assistant Director Therapeutic Recreation Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or related field and one year of experience working in creative arts for individuals with disabilities.

Special Requirements

CDL must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to work flexible schedules, depending on program needs including working nights and weekends and shifting assignment as program needs change.  

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Center. Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application.  Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.  If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
