Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to coordinate, plan, implement, and maintain transportation programs and vehicles for special populations in the City of Montgomery.  The employee will also supervise staff and volunteers during ongoing activities. The essential functions of this class are: plans, coordinates and implements daily general recreation programs for individuals with disabilities; plans, coordinates and implements transportation and transports individuals with disabilities to and from the Therapeutic Recreation Center and out of town trips; coordinates and supervises the activities of Recreation Aides and volunteers; maintains daily and weekly records, reports, forms, equipment, materials and supplies used for program activity.  The Therapeutic Transportation Assistant Coordinator reports to the General Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and one year of experience in an organized recreational program working with individuals with disabilities.  A bachelor’s degree in a related field such as recreational therapy may substitute for the year of experience.  Preference may be given to individuals with a valid Commercial Driver’s License.

Special Requirements

Employment is conditioned upon applicants acquiring and maintaining a commercial driver's license (CDL) in accordance with the provisions of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 and providing a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) from the Department of Public Safety as proof of an insurable driving record.  CDL must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.  Must be willing to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:  Physical ability to lift and carry individuals with disabilities, up to 50 lbs. unassisted, on to motor vehicles as needed to transport program participants.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Center. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
