Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this job exists to operate moderate to heavy equipment in the completion of projects for various City of Montgomery departments.  The essential functions are: operates maintenance equipment; operates heavy equipment; operates hauling equipment; maintains equipment, tools, and work area; and performs miscellaneous tasks.  Equipment Operators typically use two or more types of the following equipment: mowers, tractors and tractor implements, wood chippers, bulldozers, scrapers, front-end loaders, wheel rollers, dump trucks, hauling equipment, and/or trash compactors.  The majority of Equipment Operators’ time is spent utilizing medium-sized equipment such as tractors and various types of trucks; however,  many Equipment Operators receive training on various pieces of heavy equipment for future advancement to the Heavy Equipment Operator classification.  Equipment Operators are supervised by various classifications, dependant upon the incumbents’ assigned locations. 

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) months of experience in the operation of moderate-sized equipment such as trucks, small dump trucks and/or tractors. 

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.  A CDL may be required to perform the duties of the Equipment Operator job in some departments that utilize this position.   

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Must be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.  May be required to travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at the various work sites. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and evenings as needed by the department.   


Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Building Maintenance Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and minimally qualifying questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and minimally qualifying questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
