Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to install, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment. Employees will perform a variety of tasks requiring a practical knowledge of electricity. More difficult work is performed under supervision, but employees may work independently on more routine maintenance and repair tasks. Work is inspected in process and upon completion for workmanship and satisfactory operation of systems and equipment. The work responsibilities of this position are: to assist upper level Electricians with repairs, replacements, and/or installations of a variety of electrical systems in city buildings and facilities; maintains and replaces motors; assists with installing, maintaining and repairing electrical power and lighting systems and related fixtures and equipment. Supervision is received from an Electrician II or III.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year of experience assisting in electrical installation, maintenance or repair. 

Special Requirements

Ability to work outside for long periods of time, working in small confined spaces, working on unstable ground, working in high areas or deep underground spaces. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license. Ability to be on-call 24 hours and work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed for emergencies and/or special events.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Building Maintenance Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and  supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
