Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to serve as the primary point-of-contact between the Fleet Management’s Service Center and customers seeking repair and/or preventative maintenance on all rolling stock.  Work involves performing inspections and diagnoses of various automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, fire equipment, and other types of rolling stock.  The work responsibilities are:  initiates onsite and offsite service repairs and maintenance; manages the operations of the Fleet Management Service Center; and performs additional administrative and miscellaneous duties.  Work requires high levels of customer service and listening skills as well as a broad range of automotive technical knowledge.  Work is performed with considerable independence of judgment and supervision. The Service Writer reports to a Garage Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and three (3) years of experience as an automotive, diesel engine, or heavy equipment mechanic.  Preference will be given to applicants with basic computer operation and data entry experience.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License and an insurable driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, crawl, climb, and occasional lifting as needed to inspect and diagnose vehicles and equipment.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Fleet Management Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
