Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to oversee a small crew of semiskilled and unskilled workers in performing grounds maintenance tasks such as debris removal, street clean-up, and landscape maintenance.  The major work duties include planning assignments, supervising a crew performing skilled and semi-skilled work, and documenting project activities.  The Labor Foreman I position is a working supervisor position.  Incumbents not only perform supervisory duties, but also perform the duties assigned to their subordinates.  The Labor Foreman I must be familiar with all of the tasks assigned to a crew as well as the equipment operated in order to monitor work progress and train employees in the performance of their duties. The job incumbent is supervised by the Street Construction Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience performing grounds maintenance tasks such as debris removal, street clean-up, and landscape maintenance.  Must possess a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License “Class B” endorsement.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record in order to operate City vehicles.  On-call 24 hours as needed for special events, projects, and emergencies. Must be willing to work outdoors to include traveling over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and working in a variety of weather conditions.  Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, sit for extended periods of time and lift objects weighing from 50-70 pounds with assistance.  May be required work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed to perform job duties.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill two (2) vacancies and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Maintenance Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than six qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are six or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
