Nature of Work
The
fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform supervisory and
technical work in administering and
enforcing the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) and associated
City of Montgomery Code of ordinances. The employee is responsible for
assisting in directing the inspection of
properties, buildings or structures in the City to assure adherence to minimum
property maintenance code requirements and
applicable standards of construction, maintenance and safety. Work
Responsibilities include supervising
employees; providing technical support to inspectors and clerical staff; overseeing demolition cases; Municipal or
higher court cases; supervising the enforcement of litter, weed and parking in front yard ordinance;
and performs departmental administrative duties. Supervision is exercised over subordinate
inspectors and office personnel. This position reports to the Chief of Property
Maintenance. Decisions which involve inspection and enforcement activities are usually made independently but matters of
departmental policy are subject to review
by the Chief Building Official..
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Must have at least five (5) years of experience as an architect, engineer, inspector, contractor, or superintendent of construction to include two (2) years of responsible experience in a leadership capacity.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Ability to obtain a
valid Alabama Driver’s License to operate a city vehicle. Must be certified, or
obtain certification within one year of employment, as a Property Maintenance
Inspector through the International Code Council. Must be certified or receive
an accreditation as a lead base paint and asbestos inspector in the State of
Alabama within one year of employment.
Kind of Examination

City of Montgomery Inspections Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application. If more than five qualified applications are received,a selection procedure will be administered in order to rank applicants on the employment register. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
