Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this classification exists is to supervise the collection of business license fees and the issuance of various licenses such as marriage, hunting, fishing and boating, and drivers.  The major work responsibilities include issuing business licenses, collecting delinquent business license fees, penalties and interest, implements the junk yard regulations, maintaining records and preparing reports, issuing new marriage licenses and certified copies, issuing boating, hunting and fishing licenses, renewing drivers license, supervising two or more permanent and temporary employees, and contributing to department objectives.  The License Inspector makes decisions regarding the work flow of office staff.  The License Inspector has final authority during field visits to delinquent businesses and has broad discretion in the interpretation of laws related to the collection of license fees.  Supervision is received from the Chief Clerk.  

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E. D. certificate and two years of experience in the assessment or collection of ad valorem taxes and fees, in the collection of delinquent accounts, OR in the licensing process as it relates to retail, wholesale, professional or construction businesses; and one year of direct supervisory experience. 

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license as needed to visit delinquent businesses.  Ability to work overtime as needed.  Ability to travel to business locations within the county or to travel out of the country as needed to attend workshops.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the Montgomery County Probate Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the application will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
