Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide skilled work in the repair, servicing, and mounting/demounting of heavy equipment wheels and tires.  Employees in this class work with considerable independence in working the maintenance shop or responding to tire service calls in the field in order to examine, repair, and/or replace tires.  The work responsibilities of the job include repairing, servicing, mounting, and demounting tires for heavy equipment, and heavy or medium truck tires both in the shop and on road service; repairing, servicing, mounting, and demounting tires for light trucks, automobiles, motorcycles, scooters and other small vehicle tires; and servicing light trucks and automobiles.   For safety purposes, it is preferred that servicers work in tandem.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Tire Shop Master Auto Mechanic or Auto Mechanic.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have six (6) months experience removing, disassembling, repairing, and reinstalling heavy equipment/truck tires such as garbage trucks, limb loaders, street sweepers, dump trucks, low boy trailers, and/or fire trucks.

Special Requirements

Employment is conditioned upon applicants possessing and maintaining an Alabama Driver’s License and providing a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) from the Department of Public Safety as proof of an insurable driving record as needed to drive city vehicles.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Fleet Management Department .  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application. Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
