Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to perform skilled clerical accounting tasks involving the application of bookkeeping principles to the maintenance of financial accounts and records.  Based on specific job assignment, work functions may include reviewing, preparing and entering information from source and support documents, managing accounts, performing accounts payable tasks, performing general clerical duties, preparing bank deposits, compiling data for a variety of reports, and performing accounts receivable tasks.  Account Clerks are supervised by a variety of classifications depending on their assignment.  

Minimum Qualifications

High school or GED, successful completion of two bookkeeping or accounting courses, and two years of accounting clerical experience.  Six months of additional accounting clerical experience can substitute for the two courses.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The register established from this announcement period will expire one year from the register date.  The vacancy is with the City of Montgomery, Finance department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  Applicants will be ranked on the eligible list on the basis of a six part clerical test.  Tied scores will not be broken.

Clerical Test: Qualified applicants will be notified of the time and date to appear for the clerical test two weeks prior to the test date.  An information guide about the test is available at http://montgomeryal.gov/city-government/departments/personnel/testing-information.  Qualified applicants will be required to pass a computer skills test at a later date.
