Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to manage the maintenance and repair of systems and equipment in County facilities. The essential functions are:  troubleshoots and repairs systems and equipment; identifies and coordinates contract services; manages maintenance of grounds and grounds equipment; maintains security equipment and systems; manages housekeeping functions and maintains office areas; conducts fire safety inspections and maintains fire safety of facility; supervises employees; and performs administrative duties. Work is performed under the direction of the General Services Director who evaluates performance based upon results achieved.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.  Four (4) years of experience in building maintenance or related building trades to include two (2) years of experience in commercial building maintenance or related areas, and one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Special Requirements

Must be approved to conduct fire safety inspection as needed to meet the American Corrections Association certification or must obtain certification within one year of employment.   

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license.  Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed to complete projects.  Ability to be on-call as needed to complete special or emergency projects.  Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.  Must pass a drug test.   Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation.

Kind of Examination

Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and minimally qualifying questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and minimally qualifying questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, an exam will be administered to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
