Nature of Work

The fundamental reason the classification exists is to perform skilled welding work in the fabrication and repair of automotive and related metal structures or equipment.  Work involves the use of acetylene and electrical equipment in the heating, welding, cutting, and brazing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in accordance with standard trade practices.  Welding assignments are usually accompanied by blueprints, sketches and oral instructions indicating the type of material to be used. Little supervision is received concerning work methods or techniques which are left largely to the discretion of the employee, but work is subject to inspection as to volume of production and quality of workmanship.  Essential functions are: performs electric arc, M.I.G. and acetylene welding, brazing, silver soldering, lead soldering and acetylene burning and reads, designs and fabricates equipment.  Employee reports to the Master Automotive Mechanic.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.  Must have at least two (2) years' experience as a skilled welder or possess a Welding Degree or Certification.

Special Requirements

Employment is conditioned upon applicants acquiring and maintaining an Alabama Driver’s license and providing a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) from the Department of Public Safety as proof of an insurable driving record.  Must be able to work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must have the ability to lift objects of 60 -100 lbs. unassisted and the ability to work in inclement weather and dusty environments. Ability to remain in a standing position for extended periods of time. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, climb and balance to perform welding tasks on and under vehicles and equipment. 

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Fleet Management Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and  supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
