County Traffic Control Technician III (#CO0576)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this position exists is to provide oversight of one of two programs within the County Traffic Control Shop, either the traffic control program or the pesticide application program.  The County Traffic Control Technician III classification is a working supervisor classification.  Incumbents not only provide oversight, but also perform the duties assigned to their subordinates.  The essential functions are: directs and participates in the day-to-day activities of the traffic control group; directs and participates in the day-to-day activities of the pesticide application program; and contributes to the department objectives by accepting additional assignments.  Technician IIIs exercise independent judgment in the management and coordination of crew involved in specialized projects based on instructions received from the County Traffic Control Supervisor.  The Technician III classification is distinguished from the other Technician classifications by the leadership and administrative responsibilities required of the Technician IIIs. 

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic control devices and the application of a pesticide management program.  Must possess a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with Tanker endorsement.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and an insurable driving record.  Must have, or be able to obtain within six months of hire date, and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Applicator License (Categories: Right of Way [ROW], Ground [GRND], and Public Health Pest Control [PH]). Must be willing to be on-call 24 hours for emergencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements and traveling over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Work is performed using hazardous chemicals such as paint, sign & striping materials, herbicide, pesticides, insecticides, and other solutions.  Work will require some overtime, night, and weekend hours during peak seasons as well as prior to and/or after special city events. 
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:    Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 100 pounds as needed to move materials and utilize equipment. Physical ability to assist in maneuvering paint drums weighing up to 715lb. with the aid of hand trucks. Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds over head as needed to fill spray equipment. Physical ability to climb to and work at height of up to 12 feet as needed to install traffic signs. Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend repeatedly for extended periods of time as needed to complete various work tasks.
