The Fire Chief serves as the
executive leader of the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Department and is responsible to
the Director of Public Safety for the overall administration, operations, and
strategic direction of all departmental divisions including fire suppression,
emergency medical services (EMS), fire prevention and education, arson
investigations, codes enforcement, internal affairs, and communications. This
position provides daily leadership for department personnel and resources and
plays a key role in community risk reduction, interagency coordination, and
emergency response planning.
The Fire Chief ensures
departmental compliance with local, state, and federal laws and is responsible
for maintaining operational standards in accordance with national best
practices, including the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI)
and ISO Public Protection Classification criteria. This position directs senior
command staff, including the Chief of Staff and Assistant Fire Chiefs, and
ensures effective fiscal management, personnel development, and public safety
outcomes across a city with complex operational and geographic needs.
Bachelor’s degree in Fire
Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a closely related
field required. At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience
in a full-service fire department, including five (5) years in a senior command
role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Credentialing through the Center for Public Safety
Excellence (CPSE) as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) preferred.
- Completion of
FEMA ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, IS-700, and IS-800 courses
required or obtainable within one year of appointment. Completion of the
FEMA Professional Development Series and Senior Officials Workshop
strongly preferred.
- Executive Fire Officer (EFO) certification or
completion of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program
preferred.
- Experience managing a fire department serving
a population of at least 75,000 preferred.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must be available 24/7 for emergency response
and incident command. Must maintain residency within the city limits of
Montgomery as a condition of employment. Must possess or obtain a valid Alabama
Class D driver’s license.
