Assistant Museum Preparator (#CI7444)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled technical work in the handling, housing, transport, and installation of works of art in the Museum’s collection or on loan. The Assistant Preparator supports the execution of exhibitions and related activities by carrying out a variety of fabrication, installation, and maintenance tasks requiring precision, judgment, and adherence to professional museum standards. The position is a member of the Museum’s curatorial team and works collaboratively with curators, registrars, and external partners under the direct supervision of the Museum Preparator/Designer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Fine Arts (Visual Arts), Studio Art, Art History, Graphic Design, Architecture or a closely related field and one (1) to three (3) years of rough or finished carpentry or woodworking experience. Some experience with graphic design and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) programs is a plus.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to pick up parts from local vendors and transport works of art.  May work overtime, weekends, and holidays. May require out-of-town and out-of-State overnight courier travel.
