Therapeutic Aquatic Recreation Coordinator (#CI7344)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exist is to perform skilled recreation work in planning therapeutic aquatic recreation programs for individuals with different disabling conditions such as Cerebral Vascular Accident (Strokes), Parkinson, Rheumatic Conditions, Downs Syndrome, Spinal Cord Injuries, Osteoporosis, Visual Impairments, Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy.  Oversees a staff of volunteers and Recreation Aides.

The essential functions are: coordinates and implements the aquatic programs; supervises the aquatic programming; coordinates staff safety training,  facility inspection, and maintains  equipment used by the facility and reviews all accident reports that occur at the facility; performs other job duties as assigned; oversees the general maintenance of the pools, locker rooms and  mechanical systems; supervises two or more full-time employees;  coordinates all Aquatic programs; and coordinates the transportation of participants  and transports  participants to out of town Aquatic Events. Employee in this classification reports to the Assistant Therapeutic Recreation Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field  and one year of experience working in aquatics for individuals with disabilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. assisted or unassisted as needed to lift the pump to vacuum the pool. Must possess a Lifeguard Training Certified Pool Operator Certification through the National Swimming Pool Foundation.  Must possess a Water Safety Instructor certificate from the American Red Cross.  Ability to possess or acquire a Certified Pool Operator certification through the American Red Cross.  Ability to acquire additional aquatic certificates for disabled groupings, i.e., Swim Team Coaching Certification, Arthritis Foundation Aquatic certification and others directly related to special populations.  CDL must be obtained within six (6) months of employment as needed to drive a bus.  Must possess or be able to acquire certification as an instructor for CPR for the Professional Rescuer with the American Red Cross.
